All the complaints were rejected by the BAI…

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has rejected a total of seven complaints made against The Late Late Show following an segment in which a guest on the show said she wanted to ‘bin’ cyclists.

The segment was called ‘Bin It’ and was aired on Ryan Tubridy’s Late Late on January 12 this year, where Tubridy invited his guests to select things they’d like to put in the bin.

The panel on the show included RTÉ presenter Maura Derrane, social media star James Kavanagh and author Eoin Colfer.

While on the show, Derrane said that she’d like to bin cyclists for cycling “three or four abreast” on country roads and said that they only do it to “piss people off”.

Kavanagh compared cyclists to farm animals which won’t move out of the way.

In a brief summary of the complaints made, one complainant claims that the programme promoted mistaken myths against cyclists and the programme presenter encouraged and magnified this “hate-speech”, aimed at dehumanising people who cycle.

The complainant claims that cyclists were referred to as simply “blocking the roads”, as sheep, cows, farm animals and as arrogant. The complainant believes that this segment of the programme was offensive to people who cycle and would promote violence and aggression against cyclists.

The BAI rejected the complaints as the Late Late Show is a light entertainment programme and comments were personal views of the guests, and were intended to be “light-hearted”.

They said they did not believe that the discussion could be reasonably considered as supporting discrimination or inciting hatred towards cyclists.
