CULT FICTION: Six reasons why everyone should watch Danger 5

Deliberately bad has rarely been this good

Paul Moore

Deliberately bad has rarely been this good.

Every week we’re choosing one TV show that deserves your attention because time is precious and there are some stunning shows available to watch.

This week it’s one of the most bonkers, off the wall and surreal comedies in recent years, Danger 5.

1) What’s it about?

It’s Christmas in the 1980s, Adolf Hitler is alive and has two wishes: to see Danger 5 dead and the world under his Christmas tree.

Lost already? Trust me, this show is bonkers and the best way to describe it is imagine Quentin Tarantino’s warped sense of history in Inglourious Basterds mixed with the ropey effects of some dodgy ’80s TV shows… with added Nazi dinosaurs, robot super soldiers and an endless amount of cocktails.

Oh yeah, uranium, Atlantis and a plot to steal the Eiffel Tour also make an appearance in a show that absolutely nails a concept that’s extremely niche, something that you watch at 3am when you’re hammered and just want a ridiculously stupid thing to laugh at.

It’s a cult-classic in the waiting.

The show also regularly uses deliberately some awful miniature sets, buildings and vehicles and yet, because the budget is so low, the writers have unlimited scope to go in some bat s**t crazy directions.

There really is nothing quite like it on TV and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

It’s like having a surreal dream that’s mixed with elements of classic science-fiction movies. There’s also a healthy dose of war dramas and James Bond films thrown in for good measure.

2) It’s almost like…

A real life version of Thunderbirds that uses some of South Park’s most absurd and surreal moments of comedy.

3) It’s worth your time because…

Sometimes you really don’t need to think too much to enjoy a show but there’s more madcap ideas in one episode than most.

4) Did you know…?

Despite the shows absurd comedy, Series 2 was delayed due to unforeseen international news events and the recent ISIS actions.

5) One episode and you’re hooked…

It can only be the pilot. The people that love Danger 5 will REALLY love it but I can 100% understand if people don’t get it. It’s very niche but it’s also lots of fun.
