CULT FICTION: Six reasons why everyone should watch Peep Show

"Crunchy Nut Cornflakes are just Frosties for wa**ers"

Paul Moore

“Crunchy Nut Cornflakes are just Frosties for wa**ers.”

Every week we’re choosing one TV show that deserves your attention because time is precious and there are some stunning shows available to watch.

With news that it’s returning for another season, there’s no better time to look at one of the most innovative and hilarious comedies from the last decade, Peep Show.

Chicken Peep

1) What’s it about?

There’s no denying that the US have perfected the art of the sitcom in recent years but there are still a few things that British and Irish shows  do better than our American friends. The sheer awkwardness, reality and delicate balance between crudeness and character is something Peep Show does perfectly. Only Larry David’s work can come close to matching the best adventures of Jez and Mark, but the two most awkward roommates have an ace up their sleeve, the wonderfully warped Super Hans.

Drugs, booze, and rampant political incorrectness are all here, you’ll laugh every time that you hear the name ‘The Swan And Paedo’, but the show works for one simple reason. Jez and Mark are just normal characters in normal situations. The comedy comes from how they handle their mundane lives.

Racists Peep

Humiliation and triumph go hand-in-hand here – you’ll laugh as much as you cringe – but it’s practically impossible not to love any show that gave the world this quote: “This is good, this is just like watching a porn film, except I can’t see anything, I haven’t got a hard on, and I want to cry… ”

As mentioned before, Super Hans is easily one of the greatest supporting characters of all-time. The ever-changing names of his band are enough to crack you up alone. Spunk Bubble, Momma’s Kumquat, Coming Up For Blair, Various Artists (“to f**k over people with iPods”) Curse These Metal Hands, Man Feelings and my own favourite, Danny Dyer’s Chocolate Homunculus are all mentioned.

2) It’s almost like…

Curb Your Enthusiasm’s relentless pursuit to find comedy in any situation, no matter how dark it is, with Seinfeld’s philosophy that the characters don’t have to learn a single moral lesson.

3) It’s worth your time because…

The writing is so incredibly good that you’ll almost be convinced that the characters are your own friends.

4) Did you know…?

Super Hans was originally written with Danny Dyer in mind. Russell Brand also auditioned for the part.

5) One episode and your hooked…

‘Dream Job,’ which is episode 5 of the first season.

Mark is angry at Sophie when she gets promoted for a job instead of him and it just gets incredibly awkward between the two. Meanwhile Jeremy gets a job at a recording studio, which results in Super Hans somehow managing to mess things up.

6) If the show was a person…

It could very easily be you but you’ll probably never admit that in public.
