This week it’s those sharp, smooth and slick lawyers in Suits.
1) What’s it about?: The teacher and student dynamic has been played to death on TV shows before but the razor-sharp dialogue, sympathetic characters and legal labyrinths in Suits effortlessly breath new life into the genre.
While running from a drug deal gone bad, Mike Ross, a brilliant young college-dropout, slips into a job interview with one of New York’s best legal closers, Harvey Specter.
Harvey is basically James Bond with a briefcase. Smart, loyal and suave but most importantly, he knows how to push the legal boundaries without ever breaking them.
Harvey takes a gamble by hiring Mike on the spot because an eidetic memory means that his young protege can remember everything that he has ever read. A handy tip for someone that’s looking to make a name for themselves in the cut-throat legal world without even having the proper qualifications.
Even though Mike is a genius, he still has a lot to learn about the law and while Harvey may seem like an emotionless and cold-blooded shark, Mike’s sympathy and compassion helps keep him on the right side of things.
All this without mentioning some of the other strong supporting characters like Donna, Rachel and Louis Litt. The first season starts off at a break-neck pace, it trails off a little in Season 2, but stick with it because you’ll be glued to it.
2) It’s almost like: Mad Men if it was set in the legal world.
3) It’s worth your time because: We all wonder what the high-life is like.
4) Did you know?: Even though Louis Litt has a strange obsession with cats in the show, the actor who plays him, Rick Hoffman, is actually allergic to them.
5) One episode and you’re hooked: The pilot is strong but my personal highlight was the episode entitled ‘Undefeated’ when Harvey meets his match in a cocky opposing counsel in a class action lawsuit.
6) If the show was a person then it’s: That friend of yours who can talk their way out of any problem.
