The movie was set to start filming in just a few weeks.
Matthew McConaughey was one of a number of high profile names attached to an upcoming project titled Dallas Sting, which has just been pulled completely from its production schedule following the revelation of “disturbing allegations”.
The film is based on the true story of a Dallas girls soccer team in 1984, who travelled to China to compete in the first FIFA-sanctioned world women’s tournament, and against all odds, came out victorious.
McConaughey was set to play the team’s coach Bill Kinder, with Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick, Booksmart) set to play his daughter, while most of the rest of the team were due to be played by real-life soccer players.
The movie was set to be directed by Kari Skogland (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), and a script provided by the folks behind Netflix’s hit series GLOW.
Filming was set to begin in six weeks time in New Orleans.
However, The Hollywood Reporter states that the production company Skydance and other producers on the movie received “disturbing allegations” around the aspects of the true story that the film is based on.
Skydance then followed this up with their own investigation, which reportedly prompted them to pull the plug on the entire production.
Additionally, Deadline reports that McConaughey has walked away from his role following the allegations.
Whatever those allegations might be, they have not been fully revealed to the media as of yet, but THR noted that “the move highlights the potential risks that could arise when telling true-life stories”.
