Barney is a dinosaur from our imagination.

Sometimes it’s like life just throws a bunch of random nouns in a hat and pulls them out at random. Today, it emerged that Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya will be working on a reboot of… Barney (whether the reboot is ‘gritty’ or not is yet to be determined).

Mattel Films, which currently has Barbie starring Margot Robbie in the pipeline, is taking a next step by teaming up with Kaluuya’s 59% production company to bring Barney to the big screen. Kaluuya is also well known for starring in Black Mirror episode 15 Million Merits.

The original show, Barney & Friends, ran from 1992 until production of new episodes ceased in 2009.

The project is in its earlier stages so not much is known about it besides the fact that it exists — but our minds are already racing in an effort to cast the big purple fella.

“Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to ‘Barney’ that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations,” said Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner, according to Variety.

“Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood,” said Kaluuya, 59%. “We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.”

Into the shadows? Left misunderstood? What the fuck is going to happen in this film? Either way, there is simply no way it can ever top Barney’s Night Before Christmas, the best film of 1999.
