Netflix have added a new documentary that will make you too terrified to ever go on a holiday again

Rory Cashin

The show looks at some of the weirder tourist destinations in the world, from nuclear spots to a voodoo festival.

Director David Farrier knows his way around an odd-sounding documentary.

A few years ago, he was the man behind Tickled, a documentary about the “sport” of competitive tickling, which was seen as little more than attractive hunks being tied up and tickling each other, and the weird blackmailing fallout that arrived for anyone who got involved.

It was an absolute must-watch, and his latest effort, arriving on Netflix, looks to be just as off-the-wall and unique.

In Dark Tourist, Farrier travels to some of the most dangerous and or morbid tourist spots around the world, including former nuclear spots in Kazakhstan and Japan, as well as tours based around JFK’s assassination and the Pablo Escobar.

There’s also visits to a voodoo festival and a haunted house.

Yeah, maybe a staycation is the way to go.

The reviews have been extremely positive, too:

“Dark Tourist is the work of a cheery, good-natured, curious individual drawn to the ugliest side of human nature, and it’s that contrast which gives the series its potent energy. Over the course of each 40-minute installment, Farrier gets himself into situations both strange and perilous, which is all the more captivating because he comes across as a fundamentally jovial sort of wide-eyed explorer.” – The Daily Beast

“While Dark Tourist may not quite be No Reservations yet, the best parts of it reflect that curiosity about life outside the bubble, and this is not just a culinary bubble but a safety one.” – RogerEbert.com

Dark Tourist is available to watch on Netflix right now.
