The David Bowie biopic has found its leading man

Rory Cashin

David Bowie

Can he do what Rami Malek did with the role of Freddy Mercury?

It really was only a matter of time before the Bowie biopic arrived, especially once Hollywood noticed just how much money Bohemian Rhapsody was making.

And so we now officially have the upcoming movie Stardust, which will focus on David Bowie and his then-wife Angie, as he takes his first ever trip to America, which ultimately culminated in the creation of his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust.

According to Variety, the movie is set to be directed by Gabriel Range (Death Of A President, I Am Slave), written by Christopher Bell (upcoming Netflix series The Last Czars), and will star comedian Marc Maron (Glow) as Bowie’s record company publicist, and Jena Malone (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Donnie Darko) as Angie.

As for the main man himself, producers have chosen Johnny Flynn.

Flynn is still a relative unknown, but has an ever-growing CV, thanks to standout turns in the likes of Beast, Vanity Fair, and a recent run in London’s West End, playing opposite Kit Harington in Sam Shepherd’s True West.

The movie is set to start filming this summer, with a likely release date of sometime in the second half of 2020.

Before then, this summer sees the release of the Elton John biopic Rocketman, starring Kingsman and Robin Hood star Taron Egerton in the title role, a following in the footsteps of Mamma Mia!, there are currently two movies in production set to feature and be based around the music of much-loved artists: one about Prince, and one about George Michael.
