Derry Girls has already broken a really impressive TV record

Kate Demolder

The first of many, we imagine.

Everyone’s favourite new TV show Derry Girls stole our hearts with its belly-laughter inducing premiere instalment last Thursday evening.

And it seems that we weren’t the only ones impressed with the Channel 4 series – as the first episode has smashed previous television records held by the British broadcaster.

It turns out that the first episode of the comedy brought in an audience of 1.6 million viewers, with Channel 4 revealing that the episode has now been watched by around 2.5 million people across the world.

This makes it the broadcaster’s biggest comedy launch in almost five years.

Channel 4 has an excellent reputation of producing extremely well-received comedies over the years.

Father Ted, The IT Crowd, Adam and Joe, Ali G and Inbetweeners all experienced similar hype upon premiering on the British public-service television broadcaster.

Derry Girls’ second episode premieres Thursday night at 10pm on Channel 4.
