Our TV movie pick for tonight (Monday, 9 February) is Assault on Precinct 13, the '70s indie action thriller classic.
The breakthrough film from legendary writer-director John Carpenter (Escape from New York, Halloween, The Thing), the story follows a group of cops, criminals and secretaries who must defend an understaffed, soon-to-be-closed Los Angeles police precinct office.
This is against a siege by a violent street gang, whose members have sworn a blood oath of revenge against the cops and citizens of LA.
Assault on Precinct 13 was the second movie from John Carpenter and was made for just $100,000.
It saw the filmmaker drawing on several elements from older Westerns and then updating them for a more modern setting.
Holding a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score, the thriller is now widely considered a classic thanks to its eerie electronic score made by Carpenter himself, its mean-and-lean storytelling, its hard-hitting violence and its almost unrelenting sense of tension.
On top of getting its own pretty solid remake in 2005 starring Ethan Hawke, Gabriel Byrne and Laurence Fishburne, the '70s flick has also been cited as an influence on several similar siege thrillers like Dredd, From Dusk Till Dawn, Green Room and The Raid.
The original Assault on Precinct 13 is airing on TV tonight on the channel Legend at 1.10am.
