Movies & TV

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 11 March) is The Father, the Oscar-winning psychological drama starring Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs).
The actor plays a character also named Anthony, an 80-year-old man who refuses all assistance from his daughter, Anne (Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, Joyride).
The octogenarian's grip on reality is unravelling, however. As he struggles to make sense of his changing circumstances, "he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality".
Directed by Florian Zellner (The Son), who adapted the movie from his play Le Père, The Father also stars Imogen Poots (Green Room), Mark Gatiss (Sherlock), Olivia Williams (The Sixth Sense) and Rufus Sewell (Old).
Acclaimed for Hopkins' lead turn and the immersive way the film puts the viewer in the headspace of someone losing their mind, the psychological drama holds a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score.
It was also nominated for six Oscars, with Hopkins taking home the Best Actor prize and Zellner and co-writer Christopher Hampton (Atonement) winning in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.
The Father is on TV tonight on Film4 at 11.20pm. It will also be available to stream on Channel 4's website from Thursday, 12 March.
