Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 10 March) is State of Play, the 2009 political thriller from director Kevin Macdonald (Black Sea, The Last King of Scotland).
A Hollywood remake of the hit BBC miniseries of the same name, the film revolves around a married, seemingly honourable, rising star congressman named Stephen Collins (Oscar-winner Ben Affleck, Good Will Hunting).
When the politician's research assistant/mistress (Maria Thayer, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) dies in suspicious circumstances, however, his career is put in jeopardy.
"Journalist Cal McAffrey (Oscar-winner Russell Crowe, Gladiator), Collins' old friend, must investigate the murder, and walks headlong into a massive cover-up involving some of the nation's most promising political and corporate figures," the plot synopsis adds.
Co-written by Billy Ray (Breach), Matthew Michael Carnahan (Dark Waters) and Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton), the cast of State of Play also includes Oscar-winners Helen Mirren (The Queen) and Viola Davis (The Woman King).
This is along with David Harbour (DTF St Louis), Jason Bateman (Black Rabbit), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), Rachel McAdams (Send Help) and Robin Wright (House of Cards).
The movie version of State of Play is slightly lesser in quality than the BBC show it was inspired by.
In the swap from series to film, and from the UK to Hollywood, the story needed to be condensed. It also lost some of its grittier realism.

That said, the movie is still very much worth seeking out, thanks to its great performances, stylish direction and twisty plot.
State of Play is airing on TV tonight on the channel Legend at 9pm.
The film is also available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play, Prime Video, Rakuten TV and the Sky Store.
