Rory Cashin

The documentary is said to feature exclusive access to those involved in the recent saga.

It was been announced that Fulwell, the folk behind Sunderland ‘Til I Die, The Class of 92, and I Am Bolt, have been commissioned to create a feature-length documentary that will focus on the unfolding story behind the European Super League.

Even non-football fans will have been acutely aware of the 72-hour window when the ESL was announced and its subsequent collapse, which was set to include twelve founding members from the English Premier League, Italy’s Serie A and Spain’s La Liga.

The documentary will feature an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the decisions that lead to the ESL’s creation, as well as the days and weeks in the fallout of its own demise.

It will also feature interviews with figures from all twelve of the founding clubs, the global footballing leagues and federations, as well as players and fans themselves.

Poppy Dixon, the director of documentaries and factual commissioning at Sky, said: “The announcement and disbanding of the European Super League became one of the most volatile 72 hours in football history. Football fans and non-fans alike debated, protested and trended this game-changing decision around the world before watching its rapid collapse.

“When Fulwell pitched us the film as a high stakes thriller with exclusive access from inside the story, we knew this would be a brilliant fit for Sky Documentaries”.

The documentary is set to air on Sky Documentaries and stream on NOW later in 2021.
