A documentary about one of Ireland’s most beloved people premieres on RTÉ this week

If you haven't seen it yet, here is your chance.

Of all of the “characters” born of Ireland, this isn’t one we figured would get their own movie.

Telling the story of a struggling mattress business – but really telling the story of how success can get in the way of friendship – Mattress Men was one of those documentaries that everyone was talking about when it arrived in cinemas back in June of 2016.

In the documentary, we witness Michael Flynn make the decision to take on an image overhaul and become viral sensation Mattress Mick, coming up with weird marketing campaigns and even weirder dance songs in order to flog a few extra mattresses.

With the help of his friend Paul Kelly, things start to head in the right direction for the company, but with that little bit of success, a wedge is shoved between the two men, and a dent is put into their relationship that they may never recover from.

The documentary was pretty much universally praised when it was released in cinemas, and this week it will get its Irish TV premiere, and we fully expect to see a running commentary on Twitter from everyone watching it.

Mattress Men airs on RTÉ One on Thursday 26 October at 10.15pm.
