Documentary series on St James’s Hospital will show how they coped with The Beast From The East

Alan Loughnane

St James's

We’re sure you remember this.

In episode three of Inside James’s, we will get an insight into how the hospital coped during a crisis as management battled to keep things running when Storm Emma and the Beast from the East hit Ireland with dramatic consequences.

We will see plans being made for the staffing, catering and clinical problems that arise in such weather, and the Emergency Department preparation to receive the increased number of slips and falls.

Nuala McArdle, the Catering Manager for the hospital, also deals with a battle to keep all the inpatients fed as supplies run low due to a lack of deliveries.

She has to draft in people from other areas to help feed all of the inpatients when lots of catering staff can’t make it into work due to the horrendous weather the country was hit with at the time.

Situated in Dublin’s south inner city, a record 400,000 patients were treated in St James’s last year, and this number is rising.

The series will be Virgin Media One on Thursday night, 27 September at 9pm.

It sounds like it will be well worth tuning into for a throwback to a time when bread was the most sought after food item in the country for a few days.
