Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling chat Late Night, being a GIF, and loving Emilia Clarke

Rory Cashin

late night interview

JOE sat down with the stars of one of 2019’s funniest movies.

No offence intended to Mindy Kaling, but Emma Thompson is a goddess.

Kaling is obviously a comedy legend, having stolen so many scenes in The Office US (for which she also wrote over 20 of the episodes), but has also appeared in the likes of No Strings Attached, The Five-Year Engagement, This Is The End, and The Night Before, not to mention providing her hilarious comic timings to Pixar’s Inside Out.

So she is great and we’re automatically on board with anything she does.

However, while Mindy is hilarious as both an actress and the writer of new comedy Late Night, it is tough not to be intimidated by the amazingness that is her co-star Emma Thompson.

In the movie, Thompson plays the tyrannical host of an American late night talk show, and Kaling is the new writer brought on board to breathe new life into the old format.

It is, essentially, 30 Rock meets The Devil Wears Prada, with Emma Thompson in the lead role, and in case you didn’t know, Thompson is a bit of a comedy hero in her own right.

JOE was lucky enough to sit down with them both in the lead-up to the release of the movie, and we discussed everything from the changing tide of women in comedy to the pressures of being a GIF.

There was also time for a lovely story about Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke, and why it is exactly that Thompson loves her so much.

Meanwhile, Late Night itself is an absolute joy!

Make sure to head along to see it when it is released in Irish cinemas from Friday 7 June.
