Fifty Shades of Grey smashed some Irish box office records over the weekend

No surprise

Sex sells.

The gangs of women flocking to the cinema to see Fifty Shades of Grey over the weekend was a sight to behold.

We were in our local cinema to see the Shaun The Sheep movie when droves of stylish ladies burst through the door with one thing on their mind – Christian Grey.

The amount of people who went to see the movie over the weekend was remarkable, and it’s broken a lot of Irish box office records.

It’s the highest opener in 2015 earning €1,341,777, that’s more than €600,000 more than Taken 3 in second place.

Shocked

It’s the biggest 18 Cert opening of all-time, Hannibal previously held that record on €889,222.

Fifty Shades is the biggest February opening of all-time beating Star Wars: Ep.1 The Phantom Menace which made €1.1m.

It’s also Universal’s biggest opening of all-time ahead of  TED which raked in €1.11m.

Wow, all of that money after just three days. Sex sells.
