WATCH: There was a very strong message about mental health stigmas on First Dates Ireland

Rory Cashin

First dates Ireland

It was a great way to end the season.

The episode of First Dates Ireland on Tuesday 27 March was the last of the current season, but considering the reaction the show has received, we imagine it won’t be very long before the next season begins to air.

This season’s finale had some brilliant dates, all of whom Twitter responded to fantastically, especially the couple who somehow ended up talking about horse sperm.

Yes, seriously. You’ll just need to watch that one here, because describing it won’t do it justice.

However, another of the daters arrived on the show and brought with her a very powerful message.

Caitriona was complimented on her hair by her date, which then led her to tell the very sad story of her brother who died by suicide.

She had since become a very active part of raising awareness about the stigma of mental health, and how shaving her head was actually a visual message, doing her part to ask the question ‘Does me being bald make me less feminine? No. So why should men talking about their feelings make them less masculine?’

The issue of men being less likely to talk about their mental health is one that Caitriona has tackled head on, brilliantly, and she must be applauded for it.

Check out her full thoughts on the issue here:
