Five actors are reportedly in the running for the lead role in the upcoming Elvis biopic

Rory Cashin

The movie comes from the director of Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby.

Off the back of huge commercial hits like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, the age of the Famous Musician Biopic is definitely back in full swing, with one of the next biggies set to be a big-screen is the currently untitled Elvis Presley movie.

It will be helmed by Oscar-nominated director Baz Luhrmann, who has a strong musical DNA in the majority of his movies, from Strictly Ballroom, to the Leo and Claire version of Romeo & Juliet, through to Moulin Rouge!, The Great Gatsby, and his short-run Netflix show The Get Down.

Tom Hanks is already on board the Elvis project, set to play Col. Tom Parker, the infamous manager who controlled practically every aspect of Presley’s life.

But the lead role is still up for grabs, with The Hollywood Reporter, uhm, reporting that five actors have already screen-tested for the director.

In the running are Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver, The Fault In Our Stars), Miles Teller (Whiplash, Fantastic Four), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Kick-Ass), Harry Styles (Dunkirk, and… well, One Direction), and Austin Butler (Zoey 101, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood).

The final decision is to be announced soon, with production set to commence in Australia before the end of the year. So expect to see this everywhere come Oscar 2021 season!
