The funniest moments of Apres Match hosting the third-place play-off are utterly brilliant

Paul Moore

Apres Match

Absolutely gas.

In strictly footballing terms, Belgium have finished third at the World Cup after goals from Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard gave them a 2-0 win over England.

This being said, Irish viewers were far more concerned with the RTE panel during the game as Apres Match kept up their wonderful tradition of hosting the penultimate match at the World Cup.

Hell, as ‘Liam Brady’ put it, the third-place play-off is like “doing your mocks after the Leaving Cert…utterly pointless!”

While the match between England and Belgium was more open and entertaining than their encounter in the group stages, the events on the field were upstaged by the comedy in the studio.

In fact, ‘Martin O’Neill’ even managed to make an appearance at half-time and it’s clear that he’s still not over that defeat to Denmark in the play-off – after all, are the Irish players “dangerously good, or dangerously bad?”

The mannerisms here are absolutely spot-on and we’re loving the little bit of needle between both comedians at the end.

‘Keith Andrews’ also had an opportunity to stake his claim as Ireland’s best pundit but he  just got a bit too hung up on the importance of statistics.

It also didn’t help that Richie Sadlier and Kenny ‘at this particular moment in time’ Cunningham dropped by to spoil his moment.

As for the post-match chat with Brian Kerr, well, the former Ireland manager even had to translate some of his football insights for the culchies.

We’re still curious about what happened to Mick O’Donovan who played for Windmill Wasps after he was too jacked to play ball.
