What will you be watching?

Finally, the weekend is here. As such, why not shake off the stresses of the past few days by checking out one of the great movies on the box tonight.

Below are JOE’s recommendations for this evening.

Heat – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

In Michael Mann’s seminal heist thriller, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro finally share the screen, albeit briefly.

De Niro plays a professional thief. Pacino plays the cop on his tail. The pair’s charisma, a stacked supporting cast and incredibly muscular action set-pieces make this an all-time classic.

The Inbetweeners Movie – E4 – 9pm

Socially troubled teenagers Jay, Neil, Simon and Will go on holiday to Crete in this big-screen spin-off of the popular sitcom.

Double Jeopardy – Virgin Media One – 10.05pm

In our pick for this evening, a woman (Ashley Judd) framed for the murder of her husband (Bruce Greeenwood) suspects he is still alive. As she has already been tried for the crime, she can’t be re-prosecuted if she finds and kills him.

Boasting an awesome premise and typically brilliant turns from Judd, Greenwood and Oscar-winner Tommy Lee Jones – essentially playing his character from The Fugitive – Double Jeopardy is a top-notch 90’s Hollywood thriller.

Scanners – Horror Channel – 10.50pm

A scientist sends a man with extraordinary psychic powers to hunt others like him.

Directed by horror maestro David Cronenberg, who would later make The Fly and The Dead Zone, Scanners brought the filmmaker and his controversial style of body horror to mainstream film audiences for the first time.

Borg vs McEnroe – BBC Two – 11.05pm

One for sports fans, this biographical drama tells the story of the 1980 tennis rivalry between the placid Björn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) and the volatile John McEnroe (Shia LaBeouf).

The Big Chill – True Movies – 11.05pm

A group of seven former college friends gather for a weekend reunion at a South Carolina vacation home after the funeral of another of their college friends.

This star-studded 80’s comedy-drama features performances from Tom Berenger, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum and William Hurt.

Moonstruck – RTÉ One – 11.15pm

Loretta Castorini (Cher), a bookkeeper in New York, finds herself in a difficult situation when she falls for the brother (Nicolas Cage) of the man she has agreed to marry.

One of the best romantic comedies ever made, Moonstruck just happens to be written by the man behind Wild Mountain Thyme.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
