A Harry Potter TV show in development at HBO Max

The Wizarding World just keeps expanding.

A new Harry Potter TV show is being developed for HBO Max.

A Harry Potter show has been rumored for a while, but now Variety is reporting that the project is pressing ahead.

No writers or cast are currently attached. There are also no details on how it could fit into the Harry Potter timeline.

While the main seven Harry Potter books have been made into eight blockbuster movies, there have already been several spin-offs set in the same universe.

The 2001 Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ‘guide book’ is being adapted into a five-film series, the first two of which have already been released, and the third movie is in production. That series is set before the events of the books, in the first half of the 20th century.

There is also Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a stage play set nineteen years after the events of Deathly Hallows which follows Harry Potter, now a Ministry of Magic employee, and his son.

Plus there is also Hogwarts Legacy, an upcoming action role-playing game, set in Hogwarts in the late 1800s. The game is due to be released on video game systems in 2022.

Late last year it was confirmed that Mads Mikkelsen will replace Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3.

Johnny Depp was dropped from the franchise earlier this month, after he lost his high-profile libel case against The Sun over the newspaper’s reporting of his violence towards his ex-wife Amber Heard. The newspaper had labeled him a “wife beater”, and the court sided with The Sun.

Fantastic Beasts 3 was due to start filming in March but was delayed because of the coronavirus, and shooting restarted in September. The film’s release date was recently shifted from November 2021 to summer 2022 following the departure of Johnny Depp.
