HBO’s new crime drama with a supernatural horror twist looks absolutely incredible

Paul Moore

The Outsider

From the mind of Stephen King and featuring an excellent cast. This has serious potential.

While every single true crime, killing, and violent attack is horrific, HBO’s adaptation of The Outsider will firmly be mixing the crime genre with the supernatural.

Of course, this show is an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel of the same name and the author has a wonderful history of mixing the detective/crime and horror genres – Mr. Mercedes being a fine example of this.

Well, the 10-episode series follows police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), as he sets out to investigate the mutilated body of 11-year-old Frankie Peterson found in the Georgia woods. The mysterious circumstances surrounding this horrifying crime leads Ralph, still grieving the recent death of his own son, to bring in unorthodox private investigator Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo), whose uncanny abilities he hopes will help explain the unexplainable.

Aside from King’s work and an excellent trailer, the cast in this is superb with the likes of Ben Mendelsohn, Cynthia Erivo, Jason Bateman, Bill Camp, Mare Winningham, Paddy Considine, Julianne Nicholson, Yul Vázquez, Jeremy Bobb and Marc Menchaca all starring.

Behind the scenes, the show has Richard Price (The Night Of, The Deuce), Jack Bender (Mr. Mercedes, Lost) as executive producers, so we’re in good hands.

The Outsider premieres 12 January at 9pm on HBO. At present, there’s no news regarding an Irish release date but like all big HBO properties, we expect it to land on Sky Atlantic shortly after it airs in the US.

Take a look.
