The actor will be leaving the Netflix fantasy drama after its upcoming third season.

Henry Cavill became emotional as he said goodbye to his The Witcher co-stars at a Netflix event over the weekend.

Cavill has played the lead role of Geralt in two seasons of the hit Netflix fantasy drama and will reprise the part for the upcoming third series.

However, the streaming service announced last year that the actor would be leaving the show ahead of its already-commissioned fourth season. He will be replaced by Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth.

As such, the fantasy drama’s third batch of episodes is set to be bittersweet for fans as they bid farewell to Cavill. And the actor’s sadness over departing the role was clear to see as he appeared at Netflix’s Tudum event in Brazil over the weekend.

Cavill was joined on stage by co-stars Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan and Joey Batey to discuss season three when Batey told the crowd: “I suppose we should talk to Henry?”

As the crowd cheered for him, Cavill was visibly moved. He then told the audience:

“Goodness me. Thank you very much everyone… I really feel the love and I love you guys too. It’s so wonderful to be here.

“I actually just want to talk about my co-stars here because once again it was such a pleasure and an honor to be working with you guys.

“You guys bring so much nuance and detail to these characters, which are often at risk of being oversimplified, and what you guys have done with the characters has involved work, care, and effort.”

Cavill went on to tell the trio that working with them was “the biggest pleasure”, before concluding: “So, I just want to say I’m gonna miss you. I’m gonna miss you very much.”

The trailer for the third season of the fantasy drama was released earlier this month. It shows Cavill alongside Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Allan as Princess Cirilla of Cintra and Batey as the bard Jaskier.

Meanwhile, an official synopsis from Netflix has also teased fans with what they can expect from the upcoming season. It reads:

“As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri into hiding, determined to protect his newly reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.

“Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where they hope to uncover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery.

“They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever.”

The Witcher season three will be released in two parts, with the first set to be released on 29 June and the second on 27 July.
