Here are the best films on TV today

Paul Moore

movies on tv

Elf, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Liar Liar, and Die Hard 2 are all on.

Now that the weather warning has been extended into Monday, there’s really no need to leave the house at all. In fact, just take the week off work and chill.

FYI, don’t blame us if your boss gets mad at that plan!

Anyway, here’s what’s on the box today and it’s a packed schedule.

Invictus – 1:20pm on TG4

If you can get past the fact that Matt Damon is playing Francois Pienaar, there’s a lot to enjoy in Clint Eastwood’s story about how the 1995 Rugby World Cup helped usher in a new era in the history of South Africa.

Bugsy Malone – 2pm on Virgin Media Two

It’s still one of the greatest musicals of all time and Jodie Foster is terrific throughout. Some amount of great songs in it too.

The Mummy – 2:40pm on UTV

A  perfect Sunday afternoon film.

The Santa Clause 2  – 3:35 on ITV2

Tom Allen is in desperate need of the perfect Mrs. Clause. It’s not even close to being as good as the original though.

Mystery Men – 4:50pm on SyFy

A group of inept amateur superheroes must try to save the day when a supervillain threatens to destroy a major superhero and the city. Very good cast and a meta take on the superhero genre that was way ahead of its time.

Star Trek – 5:30pm on E4

Petition to give Karl Urban’s character Bones his own spin-off film?

Liar Liar – 5:40pm on ITV2

Jim Carrey has problems telling the truth. Keep watching until the end credits though because the bloopers are terrific.

Bridge of Spies – 18:05 on Film 4

During the Cold War, an American lawyer is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court, and then help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers.

Not as good as most critics made it out to be, but it’s still a grand way to pass the time.

Elf – 6:10pm on UTV

“Buddy the Elf, what’s your favourite colour?” A Christmas classic.

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas – 7:25 on ITV2

Another Christmas classic.

JOE caught up with Danny Elfman, the film’s composer, a few weeks ago to chat about the beloved tale of Jack Skellington.

Die Hard 2 – 9pm on RTÉ2

Spot the Colm Meaney cameo. It’s not Christmas without John McClane.

Transformers – 9pm on Sky One

Before Michael Bay’s franchise descended into an orgy of large objects exploding/crashing/beating/ other large objects, it’s worth remembering that the original film was lots of fun.

The Running Man – 9pm on SyFy

“Here is Sub-Zero! Now, Plain Zero!”

This cult-classic sci-fi film features more brilliant Arnie lines than you may remember.

Starsky and Hutch – 9pm on Comedy Central

“Alright guys, I’m not gonna lie to you. This is gonna get kinda weird… Two dragons.”

The Lost Boys – 9pm on Paramount

Great premise, great cast, great gore, great soundtrack, great nostalgia, great one-liners. It’s great.

Rambo: First Blood – 9pm on ITV4

Hard as it is to believe, Rambo only kills one character in this. Weird, eh?

Notting Hill – 9:30pm on RTÉ1

“I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.”

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – 22:15 on UTV

Darth Vader slicing through the Rebel Alliance.

Pure. Giddy. Joy.

Borg McEnroe – 10:30pm on BBC2

The story of the 1980 tennis rivalry between the placid Björn Borg and the volatile John McEnroe. It’s pretty good with Shia LaBeouf proving his chops.

Chocolat – 11pm on ITV3

A woman and her daughter open a chocolate shop in a small French village that shakes up the rigid morality of the community. Picked up five Oscar nominations and features two very charming performances from Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp.

Rocky – 11:05pm on ITV4

Eye of the Tiger.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
