RTE Summer schedule

Plenty to get stuck into.

RTÉ have unveiled their summer schedule and it’s a mix of old and new for the state broadcaster.

The return of Mrs Brown, a musical special with Niall Horan, and documentaries about Gay Byrne, John Hume, and Tommy Bowe are the highlights.

Oh yeah, there’s also the small issue of the World Cup and the GAA Championship to contend with.

Here’s our pick of what you can see on RTÉ One and RTÉ2 this summer.

One Direction star Niall Horan joins the RTÉ Concert Orchestra on RTÉ One at 6.55pm on Saturday May 12 for a special one-off show. The singer-songwriter from Mullingar will perform a selection of songs from his debut album.

Later that night,  The Eurovision Song Contest final takes place in Lisbon.

Mrs Brown will also be returning to our screens with a new series of All Round to Mrs Brown’s.

Once More With Meaning celebrates Gay Byrne’s 60th anniversary in broadcasting and Bryan Dobson will lead RTÉ One’s live coverage of the Papal visit to Ireland. Liam Neeson will narrate In the Name of Peace: John Hume in America, which tells the story of the extraordinary work of Nobel Prize-winner John Hume.

In a special one hour documentary, The Long March, Miriam O’Callaghan presents an intimate and human account of the 1968 Civil Rights movement, as told by the people caught up in a tumultuous time.

Elsewhere, Claire Byrne Live and Prime Time will host special live studio debates on the upcoming referendum on the Eighth Amendment.

Raised by a Village, My Broken Brain, and Our Lives in Property: Oxmantown Road will examine various facets of modern Irish life while two favourites, The Rose of Tralee and Up for the Match, are both returning.

In terms of sport, this summer will be jam-packed with The Sunday Game and the World Cup being broadcast.

RTÉ will also broadcast coverage of the first ever multi sport European Championships, highlights of Ireland’s historic first ever test against Pakistan and T20 internationals against India, plus racing from Galway and the Curragh.

They’ll also be airing the Republic of Ireland against on France and the USA, as well as SSE Airtricity League Live.

Plenty for everyone.
