Elba will voice the character in the sequel to the 2020 hit movie.

Idris Elba has announced he is joining video game movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2, voicing fan favourite character Knuckles.

Those who have played the Sonic the Hedgehog games will know that Knuckles is a red anthropomorphic short-beaked echidna who is determined and serious, but sometimes gullible.

Boasting the ability to glide and climb up walls, he is a powerful fighter with spiked hands. At first a rival to Sonic, they later become friends.

Elba, meanwhile, is no stranger to franchises – having appeared over the years in Prometheus, Star Trek Beyond, Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw and multiple MCU movies as the character Heimdall.

He also stars as Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad, which is currently in theatres, and is renowned for his roles in TV shows Luther and The Wire.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Elba joins returning cast members Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr Eggman and James Marsden as Sonic’s adoptive human father.

Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler also helmed the sequel which wrapped up filming this summer.
