We want to see these films made.
With Ant-Man being released in Irish cinemas this week, our own Paddy McKenna caught up with Paul Rudd to discuss Marvel’s latest blockbuster although Rudd couldn’t help himself when it came to expressing his genuine love for Ireland.
This got us thinking, if superheroes were famous Irish people then who might they be? Let us know if you have any suggestions of your own.
Thor is…
Like a successful county hurler, he’s revered as a god in his own realm because he can do things that other people can only dream of. Some claim that he’s pure magic but he can also strike with devastating power that’s wielded from his hammer Mjolnir.
He’s also a legend whose name will echo through history while he also played an integral role in a highly successful team that keeps on winning.
He’s clearly… Henry Shefflin (I wonder if Brian Cody also says “he who holds this hurl, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Henry.” Probably not)
The Hulk is…
An incredibly charismatic, intelligent and mild-mannered Bruce Banner most of the time, but there’s some ‘manic aggression’ that’s lying underneath. He’s equal parts brain and brawn, a winning combination.
The Hulk is a force to be reckoned with because his physical strength enables him to dominate those around him.
The Avengers undoubtedly feel more confident in any fight when they have their intimidating teammate next to them.
He’s clearly… Paul O’Connell (He might also be the most feared man in green)
Iron Man is…
Cocky, arrogant but more charismatic than anyone else in the business of kicking-ass. Tony Stark frequently lives the high-life – fast cars, Vegas penthouses and celebrity interviews are the norm – but underneath this bravado lies an unbreakable commitment, desire and belief in his own talents.
The suit may be tough but what lies beneath is even tougher. Everyone breaks but not him.
He’s clearly… Conor McGregor (Tony Stark also loves to rock the shades)
Beast is…
Hank McCoy from X-Men. A very normal young man that wants a life of solitude where he can focus on his work. If you gave him the choice, he would probably prefer to live on a farm in Carlow but there’s no denying his natural instincts.
The man is a force of nature, capable of wiping out three or four opponents with a single blow while also sprinting at his enemies with the speed and power of an unstoppable train.
The man is an absolute beast.
He’s clearly… Sean O’Brien (I reckon that Superman lies awake at night and worries that the flanker is coming for him. The Tullow Tank also is fond of the colour blue.)
Batman is…
Dark, brooding, intense and with a taste for the dramatic. He doesn’t say much but when he does everyone listens. Batman is also an outcast that loves to go against the popular rhetoric of the people, remember how he dealt with Harvey Dent at the end of The Dark Knight? The man is pure box-office but he has an unshakable and incorruptible set of beliefs.
He’s clearly… Roy Keane (the intensity and scowl alone is worth it)
The Joker is…
Anarchic, doesn’t believe in having a plan, burns money, has a taste for the theatrical, beloved by his own organisation and a constant thorn in Batman’s side.
He’s clearly… John Delaney
Captain America is…
Loyal, brave, inspirational, puts others before himself, a serious thinker and while he isn’t the biggest talker, he leads by doing.
He’s clearly… Brian O’Driscoll (a man who also massively bulked up since his younger days.)
Ant-Man is…
Not the tallest person that you’ll ever see but don’t underestimate him, he’s still in a strong position of power. It’s hard not to talk about Paul Rudd though because lots of people really like him. Not unlike…
He’s clearly… Michael D Higgins (he seems chuffed to be included)
The Flash is…
Fast, speedy, lightning and basically an all-round hero.
He’s clearly… Tommy Bowe (shhhhlooow down Tommy)
Groot is…
Tough, solid, dependable and a valuable member of his team. An unmovable object that’s really, really tall.
He’s clearly…
Devin Toner (I’m sure the Leinster man has a wider vocabulary and is just as good a dancer but he’s exceptionally tall).
The Fantastic Four are..
A group of individuals that each possess incredible powers but they work better when they’re part of a unit.
They’re clearly…
Ireland’s back-four during Italia ’90.
