Incestuous sex in Game of Thrones has caused problems for a street in Australia

Paul Moore

The Lannisters send their regards.

With Jon Snow growing ever closer to his aunt Daenerys in Game of Thrones, the issue of incest has once again become topical in the world’s most beloved show, but as we’ve explained before, there’s a long history of familial relationships in House Targareyn.

In the realms of fiction, Jon and Daenerys might be the best example of a very ‘close’ aunt and uncle but they’ve still got a fair distance to go in order to claim the title of ‘weirdest couple in Westeros.’ That award is currently being held by Jaime Lannister and his twin sister, Cersei.

If you want further proof that Game of Thrones reaches all facets of life then this story about a street in Australia should do it.

A suburb of Geelong, Victoria have adopted a very novel approach to naming those streets in its vicinity because every street is named after a surname that features in the series.

For example, Lannister Road in Charlemont Rise was clearly named after the most dysfunctional family in Westeros but they’ve had to rename it after complaints. Local residents have objected to the name because it’s closely affiliated with the incestuous couple.

It has now been renamed Precinct Road.

Developers in the suburb had given other streets names like Snow, Stannis, Baelish, Tywin and Greyjoy, in honour of the series.

Stannis?!?!

That’s much better. Who wouldn’t want to live on a road that’s inspired by a man who burned his own child at the stake?

Regarding the protests about Lannister Road, Gary Smith, project manager of the new development, said: “they objected to that fact that it had a reference to incest… it’s a fictional series. I even changed the spelling to make it not as obvious.”

Regarding the unique street names,  Smith said “You’ve got to think outside the box; we were getting so many names rejected. That’s why we went for Game of Thrones.”

Any chance of Hound Street being developed?
