INTERVIEW: Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejifor on their new pandemic-set heist movie Locked Down

Rory Cashin

Their new movie is available to watch at home this week.

With the arrival of the global pandemic, we all fully expected Hollywood to set about making some big movies based around such an important event.

What we didn’t anticipate is that they’d be so on-the-ball, and that a pandemic-set movie would be prepped, filmed, and released, all while the pandemic was still going on, and with some huge stars and a heavy-hitter director attached, too.

Locked Down stars Oscar-winners Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejifor as a couple pushed to their limits while living in constant close proximity to each other during the, well, lockdown. As a distraction, as well as a means to unburden themselves with financial worries again, they set about planning a jewel heist from the iconic London high-street store Harrods.

The movie is directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow), and features a very impressive supporting cast including Stephen Merchant, Mindy Kaling, Lucy Boynton, Mark Gatiss, Ben Stiller and Ben Kingsley.

It will be available to watch on PVOD platforms such as Rakuten TV, Google Store, Apple TV, Sky Store, etc., from Thursday, 11 March.

In the run-up to its release, we chatted to the movie’s stars, but obviously with the pandemic still a thing, it all happened via Zoom (much like 99% of our interactions these days).

Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejifor discuss how they were able to bring their real-world reactions to the lock down to their characters in the movie, as well as how lucky they felt to be able to be a part of this project at a time when so many people found themselves suddenly unable to go to work.
