Irishman Fergal Reilly is announced as director of the new Angry Birds movie

Let's get ready to crush some pigs...

The Irish takeover of Hollywood continues as an Irishman is announced as director of the new Angry Birds film.

Veteran animators Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis have been announced as co-directors for the upcoming adaptation of the best-selling video game app Angry Birds.

Although this is the first time either of the men has actually directed a feature length film, both animators have years of experience behind them, with Kaytis having cut his teeth with Disney (Hercules, Wreck-It Raph) and Louth native Reilly boasting an equally impressive CV having worked on Spider-Man 2, Cloudy With a Chance Of Meatballs and everyone’s favourite Looney Tunes and NBA mash-up film, Space Jam.

The two men will have the unenviable task of attempting to bring the story of chubby, enraged birds catapulting themselves into the poorly-built fortresses of egg-stealing pigs to the big screen. Well if Hollywood can make a film out of Battleship the boardgame then we’re sure they can make a film out of this.

According to an article in The Hollywood Reporter, Mikael Hed (the CEO of Angry Birds developers Rovio Entertainment) said “I’m very excited that Fergal and Clay have joined us, bringing with them their vast expertise. They are two of the brightest rising talents in animation, and I’m confident we are building the right team to tell the story of Angry Birds and deliver an amazing movie experience to our fans.”

With the film not slated for release until July 2016, JOE wishes Fergal all the best in his pig-crushing, feature film-directing adventure.

Right, we’re off to watch Space Jam again.
