JOE’s Duck Dynasty: Ranking our favourite characters from The Mighty Ducks

Who will make it into our flying V?

Alan Loughnane

JOE was delighted to discover this morning that rumours are circulating about the possibility of a fourth instalment in the Mighty Ducks franchise.

The Mighty Ducks 1 & 2 were among our favourite films growing up and JOE grew to love the hilarious characters like Goldberg and Averman while admiring the skills of Adam Banks and Charlie Conway.

With this in mind, we have decided to rank our favourite Mighty Ducks characters to establish who is the coolest and most awesome of all the characters in the successful movies.

Are you a Mighty Ducks fan? Have a read of our list and let us know what you think…

10. Dwayne Robertson

The man hailing from Austin, Texas was one of our beloved characters with his country twang and lassoing ability which was good craic during practices. Our favourite scene was when he woke up with his face covered in shaving foam following a prank involving his face being tickled with a feather while he slept.

9. Wolf ‘The Dentist’ Stansson

May not be the most popular name on the list but he was without doubt one of the coolest characters in the films with his slicked-back hair and his quality nickname. It was a bit of a d*ck move to burst the beach ball and his belt on Bombay’s leg was uncalled for but he was an outlaw, he wasn’t meant to play by the rules. We especially like his bad attempts at insulting Bombay by asking him to show “the famous triple deke” that his daddy taught him.

8. Adam Banks

We certainly didn’t like Adam Banks because of his personality because we have seen dead cats with more character than this man, but god could he play hockey. His goal saving dive in D3 was rightfully voted into the greatest sporting moments of the ‘90s*. Originally a villain, he soon became part of the flock and he was a pretty cool player.

7. Dean Portman

This guy was an absolute boss. One of the two Bash Brothers who caused some much havoc in the second and third films, he was a great character. His outrageous size in the second film was questionably attributed to hormones but with all the recent controversy surrounding the age of new Man Utd signing Radamel Falcao, we think coach Bombay should have sought out proof of age. His return in the third film and some of his hilarious moments in the second film are among the highlights of the film series.

6. Gordon Bombay

It was impossible not to like the originally reluctant coach who took charge of District 5 as a result of a court order and turned them into world beaters. Played by Emilio Estevez, the brother of Charlie Sheen is the key reason the first two movies are such a success. As I mentioned in an earlier article, there are vicious rumours circulating that he slept with Charlie Conway’s mom, but we don’t believe that. We think they had a purely platonic relationship with an added kiss on the cheek here and there. Coach Bombay would not destabilise his position as hockey coach by having relations with a player’s mother and that is the end of the matter.

5. Fulton Reed

Reed couldn’t even skate in the first film but he had such a ferocious shot that goalies were scared to stand in the way. We like him because he is another member of the Bash Brothers and he also beat up those nasty members of the Hawks at the start of D2. He was somewhat of a manchild throughout the films as we didn’t know whether to judge him as his size (adult) or his age (teenager).

4. Charlie Conway

Probably the main character in the films but he is surprisingly not our favourite person in the films. Don’t get us wrong, Charlie is a really cool guy and his work ethic and hockey skills make him a great character. However, it all comes back to his Mom and whether or not he would have been captain had she not been ‘allegedly’ canoodling with Coach Bombay. All Charlie wanted was a father figure in his life, was that too much to ask for?

3. Lester Averman

Averman weighs in at third place simply for his one-liners alone. Not much needs to be said about this guy except to mention his best moment. When facing Iceland in the Junior Goodwill Games he says, “Iceland are bigger, faster stronger. They’ve got more facial hair”. Quality stuff…

2. Julie ‘The Cat’ Gaffney

Every boy who watched The Mighty Ducks secretly had a crush on this fantastic goalie (Hell JOE still has a crush on her now!). She was JOE’s favourite female character and would have been our favourite if not for a certain other goalie in the squad. Julie combined brains with amazing goalkeeping skills and in D3 she proved that Bombay was wrong for leaving her on the sidelines during the second movie.

1. Greg Goldberg

Goldberg is our favourite character in the films bar none. Not a conventional athlete, he doesn’t pretend to be something he is not. He embraces his unfitness and laziness while coming up with some brilliant witty moments. He does prove his adaptability in D3 when he moves outfield and plays well for the Ducks. We just love his attempt to use his breaks in the third movie…
