JOE’s favourite moments from the career of funnyman Jim Carrey

"You're from Austria eh? Well then, g'day mate, let's put another shrimp on the barbie..."

Eoghan Doherty

To celebrate the upcoming release of Kick-Ass 2 in Irish cinemas, we look at some of the best moments from the career of the film’s latest vigilante recruit, Colonel Stars and Stripes AKA Mr. Jim Carrey.

In recent weeks, Carrey has been quite outspoken about the use of violence in the film, even though we’re pretty sure he was fully aware of what he was doing when the director asked to him to bash a bad guy’s brain in with a baseball bat.

You did know what you were signing up for right Jim? I mean, the first film is famous for a killer 11 year old girl known as Hit-Girl who calls her opponents the c-word at every available opportunity? And no, the c-word is not “cauliflower.”

And just what has he got against little girls anyway?

In spite of Carrey’s mis-givings though, JOE for one cannot wait to see the film when it is released on August 14th. Here’s a quick peek at the Red Band trailer:

In the meantime, here are some of the actor’s biggest and best moments, and it seems like he’s definitely no stranger to violence as the comedian excellently demonstrated in fight scenes in The Cable Guy (versus Owen Wilson), in Liar Liar (versus himself) and in Dumb & Dumber (versus some guy’s poor wobbly bits):

Before he became one of the highest paid comedians in Hollywood, Carrey was just like you and me, and made his humble beginnings as an impressionist, starring on SNL alongside a young Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan. Ok, so maybe that’s not exactly like you and me. Here they are in their famous Night At The Roxbury scene:

Although most famous for his elastic-faced comedy performances, Carrey has also ventured into the world of ‘serious’ acting and being an ‘Act-tor who Acts,’ most notably when he starred in Michel Gondry’s beautiful tale of love and relationships… with people who are named after tiny little pieces of fruit. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind:

See? Acting.

The Truman Show, another slightly more serious role, also proved just how nuanced an actor Carrey could be when asked:

As Frank Sinatra sang, “1994, it was a very good year.” Well, he didn’t actually sing those lyrics but 1994 was certainly a year for Carrey to remember as he starred in not one, not two, but three absoultely brilliant films – The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and, one of the best comedies of all time, Dumb & Dumber.

Here are some brilliant moment from each.

The Mask

And sure, while we’re on The Mask, here is Cameron Diaz’s spectacular entrance and Carrey’s, completely understandable, reaction:

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective:

And, just for good measure, here’s one from the 1995 sequel, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls:

Dumb & Dumber. Just where the hell do you begin? Why not with a compilation of ALL the best bits? It’s worth it:

JOE loved Jim Carrey in Dumb & Dumber so much we even modeled our hair in primary school after him. That’s right, we were this cool:

There is also some great news on the comedy horizon for Dumb & Dumber fans, as Carrey is currently in talks to return as Lloyd Christmas in the upcoming and hopefully hilarious sequel, Dumb & Dumber 2.

Although some of his film choices of late haven’t been as great as some of his earlier work, this final scene is one of those moments in a film when you think to yourself, “I WISH that happened to me.” It’s Jim Carrey as the man with all the power, Bruce Almighty:
