Our TV movie pick for tonight (Saturday, 17 October) is King Frankie, the 2024 Irish drama starring Peter Coonan (Hokum, Love/Hate).
The actor plays Frank 'King' Burke, a taxi driver living a quiet, modest life in a Dublin suburb. But Frankie's life wasn't always like this.
At the height of the Celtic Tiger, he was a hot-shot high-roller. The story cuts between the present day and Frankie's young daughter's birthday party at a five-star hotel in 2009, where everything fell apart for the self-professed King.
The debut feature from writer-director Dermot Malone, King Frankie brims with atmosphere and tension.
The movie works as a haunting Celtic Tiger parable, and as a great showcase for the talents of Coonan, one of Ireland’s most electric screen presences.
King Frankie is airing on TV tonight on RTÉ One at 9.20pm. The film's also currently streaming on Prime Video.
