Our TV movie pick for tonight (Wednesday, 12 November) is Last Night in Soho, the 2021 film from director Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, the new reboot of The Running Man).
The mystery horror thriller centres around Ellie, a shy teenager (played by Thomasin McKenzie, Jojo Rabbit) studying fashion design in London, who is mysteriously able to transport to the city in the 1960s.
There, she encounters and becomes fascinated with a dazzling aspiring singer named Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Menu).
"But 1960s London is not what it seems, and time seems to be falling apart with shady consequences," the plot synopsis adds.
Also starring '60s icons Diana Rigg (On Her Majesty's Secret Service), Rita Tushingham (A Taste of Honey) and Terence Stamp (The Limey), alongside Matt Smith (House of the Dragon), Pauline McLynn (Father Ted) and Sam Claflin (Lazarus), Last Night in Soho retains Wright's trademark stylish direction and clear love of music.
That said, it also marked fresh territory for the director, with its story being darker and less comedic than his previous work.
McKenzie and Taylor-Joy's lead turns and Wright's gorgeous recreation of Swinging Sixties London make the horror thriller worth seeking out, even though its plot does end up growing overly convoluted.
Last Night in Soho is airing on TV tonight on Film4 at 9pm. The movie is also currently streaming for free on Channel 4's website.
