AC-12 are going in a new direction.
There’s something immensely satisfying about sticking with a show and watching it get better and better with every passing season. Breaking Bad, Parks and Recreation and the US Office are fine examples of this, but in terms of British TV shows, Line of Duty is the perfect example.
While the first season was a very decent but relatively straightforward police drama, the subsequent seasons continued to increase its scope, scale, and amount of episodes.
When it originally aired, viewers were gripped to the BAFTA Award-nominated police drama but Line of Duty also got a new lease of life when it arrived on Netflix because TV fans could binge watch it to their heart’s content.
Hell, Season 4 of the hit show has an 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
If you’re eagerly waiting on some new episodes then Jed Mercurio, the show’s creator, has revealed that he’s currently writing the new season.

The BBC has previously announced that they’ve commissioned two more seasons of the hit show and Mercurio has hinted that the new season will be going in a very different direction.
In an interview with Digital Spy, he said: “I think that the series has to move forward. It’s actually quite sobering to look back at series one – the cast were so much younger then, the dynamic between them was different. Steve (Martin Compston) and Kate (Vicky McClure) are now characters in their 30s, rather than in their 20s, and Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) has been heading AC-12 for a good number of years now. So all of these things have to be looked at in terms of the evolution of the characters, and we have to keep moving forward. There does come a point where we have to develop things in a new direction if they’re to remain exciting and fresh dramatically.”
In a previous interview with TV Times, Mercurio was very cryptic when asked about the possibility of Roz Huntley returning. “It was reasonably conclusive that Roz had accepted her guilt and she was serving her sentence, but we never close the door on any living character. There are always ways in which we’d bring someone back for the right story,” he said.
If the next season is as good as Season 4, we’re in for a treat.
