Lisa McGee leads a strong Irish showing on the Netflix slate

The show, titled 'Jig', was announced by Netflix at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Wednesday and will shoot in the north next year.

Promotional material describes it as a rivalry story: "Best friends Cara and Fletcher, from the struggling Sweeney School of Dance in Derry take on their sworn rivals in Florida, a slick, sponsored, seemingly unbeatable operation.

"We follow both teams as they journey towards the all important World championships. But who will lift that trophy?"

It is McGee's latest comedy after Derry Girls and How to Get to Heaven From Belfast, and it lands as part of a slate with a notably heavy Irish presence, The Journal reported.

Nicola Coughlan, a Derry Girls alum, is among the cast of a six-part adaptation of Roald Dahl's short stories for adults, written by Danny Brocklehurst, which began production this month in Manchester and across the north of England.

No release date has been confirmed for Jig yet.

Filming is not due to begin until next year as Irish viewers face a wait.

However, when it does arrive it will land on Netflix here the same day as everywhere else, so it is one for the watchlist alongside what's new on Netflix Ireland.

For Derry, it is another turn in the spotlight.

Derry Girls turned the city into a tourist trail, and a comedy set on the feis circuit, wigs, sequins, and a sponsored Florida superteam to beat, could do something similar for Irish dancing.
