Netflix are remaking one of the best Western TV shows ever

Both shows are based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning epic Western novel.

Set in the late 1870s, the book follows a group of audacious cowboys on a perilous cattle drive across the sprawling wilderness, from Texas to Montana.

"Bound by duty and hardened by the relentless frontier, their shared journey captures the enduring spirit of the West," the plot synopsis adds.

Described by The New York Times upon release as "the great cowboy novel", Lonesome Dove went on to win the 1986 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction.

An also acclaimed TV miniseries adaptation was released in 1989. It starred Oscar-winners Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones as the novel's retired Texas Rangers lead characters, Augustus McCrae and Woodrow F. Call.

The cast also included Anjelica Huston, Chris Cooper, Danny Glover, Diane Lane, and a young Steve Buscemi.

This month, Netflix announced that a new TV series adaptation of the book is in the works. Zoe Kazan (Wildlife) and Jeb Stuart (Die Hard) have been announced as showrunners.

The pair both worked on East of Eden for the streaming service, another upcoming series adaptation of a classic American novel, this time by John Steinbeck.

Starring Christopher Abbott, Ciarán Hinds, Florence Pugh, Martha Plimpton, Mike Faist and Tracy Letts, East of Eden lands on Netflix on 1 October.

The cast of the new Lonesome Dove has not yet been revealed, nor has a release date.
