It looks like a Derry Girls movie is indeed on the way, putting to rest any of those intense fears we all harboured about its next season being the last we’d see of one of the best sitcoms in years.
While it’s still up in the air about what will happen following the show’s third season, creator Lisa McGee has said she’ll be considering how best a Derry Girls film would look in the meantime.
“For a while, I was kind of like, I dunno will it work. But now an idea is starting to vaguely form in my head,” she told The Irish Mirror.
“After series three I’ll think about that a bit more. I’d like to do it, and I think the girls would like to do it. The cast even, some of them are men and boys.
“I think that would sort of be the long term plan. We should have been shooting it now but it has been pushed back and we are trying to wait until it is safe.
“There is a lot of stuff to work out. Our show is complicated to film in these circumstances. We want to do it as well as we possibly can, we want it to be brilliant.”
And brilliant it would be.
Season two of the award winning comedy recently landed on Netflix, only to be prematurely and quite devastatingly removed before we had a chance to watch it for the 87th time.
But that’s okay, because the entire Channel 4 series is still available to watch on All4, so you know, that’s the same thing.
The girls (and boys) were due to start filming season three this spring, but understandably, the coronavirus pandemic halted any and all shooting commitments.
Tommy Tiernan, who plays Da Gerry, told Jason Manford earlier this year that he expected season three would be the show’s last.
“This is the last series, I think. As far as I know this is the very last series,” he said.
“I feel lucky to be working with such funny people. There are two members of the cast that I can’t look at because I laugh.
“It’s enough to bring you out in sweats. Kathy Kiera Clarke who plays my sister-in-law… Kathy is one of the funniest people that I’ve ever worked with and I’m just not able to look at her.”
