Don’t miss this.
Louis Theroux’s Altered States has turned out to be appointment viewing thus far.
Set in America, the new three-part series has looked at polyamorous lifestyles and assisted suicide, the latter proving “one of the most difficult” subjects Theroux has tackled.
Tonight – Sunday 25 November – sees the filmmaker approach the true cost of adoption, as Theroux meets with a family paying out huge sums of money in the hopes of starting a family.
As the trailer below highlights, this is a system that is problematic and open to abuse.
‘Take My Baby’ explores open adoption in California, “where women hand over their babies at birth to adoptive families paying tens of thousands of dollars for the privilege.”
Louis learns that the average price of an adoption is anywhere between $35,000 and $40,000 in a billion dollar industry that is increasingly the norm for Americans.
He also examines the tension that can occur in such unique relationships between strangers, particularly where life-altering promises are reneged upon.
Altered States is on tonight on BBC Two at 9pm.
