Luther Movie

Luther will return.

Aside from traumatising everyone from taking public transportation again, Season 5 of Luther marked a return to form as Idris Elba’s beloved detective came face-to-face with a character that we all know and love.

If you haven’t seen the new episodes yet, consider this to be your spoiler alert.

Yep, despite airing more than six months ago, we’re still warning about spoilers.

Luther Movie

After Benny Silver (Michael Smiley) was killed, Luther set his considerable skills to tracking down the murderous couple of Vivian and Jeremy Lake (Hermione Norris and Enzo Cilenti).

After breaking into their lair and apprehending the couple, it appeared that we were all set for a happy ending. However, the conflicted relationship between Luther and Alice (Ruth Wilson) came to the fore.

Seconds after we finally caught our breath, Alice (Ruth Wilson) gunned down DS Halliday in the middle of the street.  Five minutes and two bullet wounds later, Alice and Luther had a showdown at an empty building site.

Luther may have been shot twice, but he survived as Alice plummeted 50 feet to the ground.

Is she dead? Is she alive? Is Alice going to get her own spinoff?

Well, in an interview with IndieWire, David Cross (creator of Luther) has said that he’s very optimistic that Alice will return.

“Well, I would hesitate to ever say that Alice Morgan is dead. The Luther universe could probably never exist without her,” he said.

When asked about the possibility of an Alice Morgan spinoff, Cross said that he’s interested in developing the world of Luther.

“As we look at continuing the ‘Luther’ universe, we’re certainly talking about the futures of all the characters, is all I can say. One of the curses of my life is that I wake up every morning with ‘Luther’ on my mind. I’m always thinking of where we could take things, because there will always be new places for these characters to go, and that’s exciting, he said.

Idris Elba has never hid his desire to make a Luther film and Cross is optimistic that it will happen.

“Both Idris and I, and the broader team, are very keen to continue telling Luther’s stories. There is absolutely no suggestion that we have finished with the character. It’s just a question of what format those future stories might take. I’m as confident as Idris is, that ‘Luther’ would make a great movie. And that’s as broad a lead as I can give you on that subject.”

Whatever direction Luther takes, we’re definitely going to be watching.
