Luther the movie: Idris Elba confirms it’s coming, and here’s what we know so far

Jade Hayden

“It is happening…”

Luther the movie is, indeed, happening. At least, it is if Idris Elba has anything to do with it.

The star of the BBC psychological thriller has been chatting about the possibility of a Luther film for a while now, but recently, he confirmed that it is actually going to be a thing. At some point. Promise.

“I’ve maintained I’d like to see it come to a film,” he said during last week’s BAFTAs.

“And that is where I think we are heading towards – a film. And I’m looking forward to making that happen. It is happening.

“With film, the sky’s the limit. You can be a little bit more bold with the storylines, and a little bit more international, and a little more up the scale. But John is always going to be John Luther.”

Great to hear it, excellent news.

Elba first teased the possibility of a Luther film a few years back. When chatting to LADBible he said: “For me it would be nice to take Luther up a scale. Make the storyline bigger, make it slightly more international.”

Luther launched on the BBC back in 2010, quickly amassing a considerable following of people who enjoy a thriller, enjoy a psychological thriller, and enjoy a psychological thriller starring an actor such as Idris Elba.

The series’ fourth (and last, so far) season premiered last January, and since then, we’ve had little to no information as to when we’re getting more Luther goodness on our screens.

The only thing we know for certain is that it will be at some point – and that Idris is up for it.

And that’s all we need to know for now.
