Netflix’s new thriller Messiah looks like it will be hugely controversial

Rory Cashin

messiah

This is sure to get a lot of people talking.

Remember that Joan Osborne song from the mid-90s, that asked “What if God was one of us? / Just a slob like one of us / Just a stranger on the bus / Tryin’ to make his way home”?

Well, that appears to generally be the plot of Messiah, the new show from Netflix, except that it also involves international intrigue, terrorist plots and perhaps the biggest con ever seen.

In the show, the potential messiah in question (played by Mehdi Dehbi – London Has Fallen, A Most Wanted Man) seems to be able to perform life-saving miracles, disappear into thin air and reappear safe and sound on the other side of the world.

This grabs the attention of a CIA operative (Michelle Monaghan – Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, True Detective), who believes that it is all some kind of scam, but to what end, she is entirely unsure. And becomes even less sure as the messiah begins amassing thousands of followers around the globe, potentially creating a cult group, or his own private army.

The messiah insists that he has been sent by God and the story unravels from the perspective an Israeli Shin Bet officer, a Latino preacher and his Texan daughter – a Palestinian refugee – and coverage by the media.

Messiah is directed by the folks behind V For Vendetta, Sense8 and Blindspot and all 10 episodes of the show will be available to watch on Netflix on 1 January 2020.
