We might finally know where the Night King got those chains from

Paul Moore

Every Game of Thrones fan is still curious.

Despite the fact that it originally aired on August 20th, Game of Thrones fans are still obsessing about one detail from the ‘Beyond the Wall’ episode – how did the Night King get those chains?

Granted, in a world that’s filled with dragons, magic, White Walkers, and resurrection, a few chains suddenly making an appearance isn’t too much of a leap of faith, but ever since Viserion was dragged from that lake, fans of the show have been obsessing about those chains.

As stated before, the best reason that we can provide is that the Night King is a greenseer like Bran – we’ve written extensively about that very plausible theory here and it would explain a lot about the show. He knew Jon and Daenerys were about to attack and he came prepared.

Also, it’s worth noting that there’s no indication of the time period that passed as the events in ‘Beyond the Wall’ unfolded. For all we know, the Night King attacked Viserion, Team Jon/Dany escaped, the Night King turned back to get some chains before resurrecting a terrifying ice dragon to torment the Seven Kingdoms with.

There are also other theories about how these chains suddenly appeared. People have argued that the White Walkers took them from the Free Folk fishing village of Hardhome after that epic massacre. Other people think that these chains may have originated from The Wall – after all, the Night’s Watch needs them when they’re using that scythe.

Regardless of the reason, one of the most popular Game of Thrones fansites, Talking Thrones, have a very definitive take on where the chains came from.

After being asked about their origin, they used a close-up image of Viserion on the frozen lake as proof that the chains were originally there to begin with.

As you can see below, they’re not entierly wrong because the chains are visible at the forefront of the image.

Granted, those chains at the foreground appear to be very close but for the case of perspective, it’s worth remembering that we’ve been told that Dany’s dragons are now the size of 747 jumbo jets.

Here’s the aerial view from above.

Regarding this wooden structure/dock that the chains are attached to, images from that episode show that this is the case.

The depth of perception makes it harder to see and the scale/weight is still off, but as Viserion is plucked from the water, it’s clear that there’s no other wooden planks, sticks or boards near the dragon.

While this isn’t exactly definitive, it’s the closest thing that fans might get to a ‘rational’ explanation as to why those chains appeared. Bottom line, there were chains in the vicinity.

FYI, we’re still hoping that the greenser theory is the reason why,  but this might be more plausible. Until it’s definitively answered, we’ll keep on wondering.

Anyways, we’re still terrified that the Night King has a dragon!
