Movies on TV Friday 4 October

The weather is horrific. Watch a movie.

That’s pretty much the entire sell, guys.

It’s gross outside at the time of writing, and this scribe is soaked to his skin.

Let’s just do this. Here’s the most interesting cinematic options on the television on this grim Friday 4 October…

X-Men 2 – Film 4 – 6.10pm

The franchise peaked right here.

Crimson Tide – ITV4 – 9pm

Excellent, tension-filled submarine face-off between Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington, both bringing their A-game.

The One – SyFy – 9pm

Evil Jet Li travels across dimensions to kill every version of himself – in order to become The One, you see – until Good Jet Li tries to stop him.

American Pie 2 – ITV2 – 9pm

Fairly certain ITV2 is contractually obliged to show this film once every two weeks.

You Were Never Really Here – Film 4 – 11pm

Joaquin Phoenix is currently winning rave reviews for his performance as Joker, but he’s even better here as a troubled hitman who gets caught up in a deep, dark conspiracy web.

12 Years a Slave – RTÉ One – 11.50pm

Powerful, unflinching drama featuring an astounding performance from Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The Master – Film 4 – 1am

Phoenix again, excelling with another layered and difficult character as he enters into the surroundings of a cult led by the charismatic Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Crimson Peak – Channel 4 – 1.10am

Guillermo Del Toro’s haunted house tale was met with mixed reviews upon release – the contention that it isn’t all that scary is, unfortunately, fair enough – but there’s much to enjoy here, not least the incredible production design – they actually built that house!

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
