Movies & TV

22nd Jan 2022

A terrifying horror film is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Succession’s Brian Cox stars in the underseen chiller.

With the 8pm curfew on hospitality being lifted, it is less likely people will be staying in this Saturday night.

But for those who are, here is the movies on TV situation this evening.

The Karate Kid – Syfy – 8pm

This is the remake with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith.

The Day After Tomorrow – Film4 – 9pm

Earth is plunged into a new Ice Age in this flick from king of disaster movies Roland Emmerich.

Payback – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Mel Gibson is out for, you guessed it, payback.

Happy Gilmore – Comedy Central – 9pm

Adam Sandler stars in this classic sports comedy.

Robin Hood – ITV4 – 9.05

This is Ridley Scott’s epic take on the legend, starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett.

Transformers – Sky Showcase – 9.30pm

The decent first entry in the long-running sci-fi action saga.

Midway – Channel 4 – 9.30pm

Speaking of Roland Emmerich, he also helms this middling WWII epic with a cast including Dennis Quaid, Patrick Wilson and Woody Harrelson.

The Darkest Hour – RTÉ2 – 9.30pm

In this underwhelming sci-fi, five young people in Moscow lead the charge against an alien race who have attacked Earth via our power supply.

Northern Soul – TG4 – 11.05pm

In this well-reviewed British drama, two young teenagers’ lives in the 70s are changed forever by the discovery of American soul music and the dance culture that grew up around it in the UK.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe – Film4 – 11.25pm

In our pick for tonight, a father and son coroner team (Brian Cox, Emile Hirsch) experience supernatural phenomena while examining the body of an unidentified woman.

With its creepy and unique premise, a constant air of an unease and a typically brilliant performance by Cox, The Autopsy of Jane Doe certainly earns its 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

American Animals – RTÉ2 – 11.45pm

Barry Keoghan and Evan Peters are excellent in this documentary/fiction hybrid which tells the true story of four students who planed a heist of their college library.

Hart’s War – RTÉ One – 11.50pm

Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell star in this WWII-set thriller.

Ronin – ITV4 – 11.50pm

This slick ’90s action-thriller with Robert De Niro boasts some of the best car chases ever captured on film.

Gods of Egypt – Channel 4 – 12.15am

Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau star in this critically panned fantasy epic.
