Movies on TV Thursday 3 January

Lights, camera, action.

It’s Thursday. The big one.

Thursday 3 January. 2019 in full effect.

It’s nearly the weekend, so that’s decent, right?

Also decent – tonight’s picks for movies on TV.

Jumper – SyFy – 7pm

Hayden Christensen attempts to start another sci-fi franchise with the help of Jamie Bell, Rachel Bilson and Samuel L. Jackson.

A sequel never arrived.

Jaws – ITV4 – 8.05pm

Shark attack.

Hot Fuzz – ITV2 – 9pm

Edgar Wright’s vivid tribute to his favourite action movies is still sharp some 12-odd years on.

Hail, Caesar! – RTÉ 2 – 9.30pm

The Coen Brothers assemble yet another top ensemble – George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Alden Ehrenreich, Frances McDormand – as they take a sideways glance at the old Hollywood studio system and the various over the top pratfalls within.

Not exactly vintage Coens, but good fun nonetheless.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra – SyFy – 10pm

Good dumb fun and worth it entirely for Joseph Gordon Levitt’s bizarre, unrecognisable performance.

Along Came a Spider – Film 4 – 10.45pm

Morgan Freeman reprises his role as detective Alex Cross in a pot-boiler thriller that’s not as effective as Kiss the Girls.

The Last Boy Scout – TCM – 11pm

Bruce Willis teams up with Damon Wayons in a fast-paced, fast-talkin’ action thriller with Shane Black on script duties and the late Tony Scott behind the camera.

Spirited Away – Film 4 – 12.50am

Beautiful animation and a terrific dark fairytale from Hayao Miyazaki.

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three – RTÉ One – 1.15am

Walter Matthau heads up a classic crime caper.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
