Movies on TV Tuesday 17 September

Tuesday.

The second day of the week.

A night in which movies are available to watch on your television, though it’s fairly slim pickings, what with the return of the Champions League and all.

Here’s what it looks like on this Tuesday 17 September…

Die Another Day – ITV4 – 8pm

Pierce Brosnan’s final adventure as 007 and handily one of the most bizarre, over the top Bond films ever constructed.

Die Another Day is a complete and utter mess, leaving the franchise no choice but to reboot in the vein of Bourne, but it’s so ridiculous that you can’t take your eyes off it.

Elysium – SyFy – 9pm

Matt Damon, clad in a robot mech suit type thing, battles the elite in Neil Blomkamp’s stylish if uneven vision of the future.

Arrival – Film 4 – 9pm

Arrival is more like it, presenting a sensitive, patient and highly emotional science fiction drama as Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner struggle to communicate with extraterrestrial envoys.

Total Recall – ITV4 – 10.35pm

The Arnold Schwarzenegger version, and thus the good one.

Oldboy – Film 4 – 1.15am

This would be the Josh Brolin-fronted remake of Park Chan-wook’s stunning, twisted, and stunningly twisted 2003 original.

A quite dreadful reheating that misses the point in favour of over-acting (Sharlto Copley is mind-blowing in this regard) and terrible script tweaks, and perhaps worth the watch purely for how wildly misjudged the entire project was to begin with.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
