Pain and Gain – Comedy Central – 9pm
Based on true events, this action comedy about a trio of bodybuilders (Anthony Mackie, Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg) in Florida who get caught up in a series of crimes is one of its director Michael Bay’s best movies.

The Equalizer – Film4 – 9pm
The first entry in Denzel Washington’s very solid action trilogy.

Connie Britton and Salma Hayek in Beatriz at Dinner, our TV movie pick for tonight

Orca – Legend Xtra – 9pm
A ’70s aquatic thriller in the vein of Jaws starring Richard Harris, Charlotte Rampling and Will Sampson.

A Kiss Before Dying – Legend – 11pm
A ’90s romantic thriller headlined by Matt Dillon and Sean Young that is based on a novel by Ira Levin (Rosemary’s Baby, The Stepford Wives).

Beatriz at Dinner – BBC Two – 11.15pm
Our pick for tonight is this 2017 comedy-drama about a working class masseuse named Beatriz (Salma Hayek) whose car breaks down as she leaves the house of her wealthy client Kathy (Connie Britton). As such, Kathy invites Beatriz to a dinner party she has planned.

During the evening, however, tensions grow between Beatriz and Kathy’s guests, particularly a powerful real estate tycoon (John Lithgow).

Also featuring amongst its ensemble cast Amy Landecker, Chloë Sevigny and Jay Duplass, Beatriz at Dinner comes from director Miguel Arteta (Cedar Rapids, Youth in Revolt) and writer Mike White (School of Rock, The White Lotus).

Despite only being 83 minutes long, the movie packs a lot into its running time thanks to its incredible performances – particularly from Hayek and Lithgow – and its sharp script that thoughtfully probes several contemporary issues through Beatriz’s interactions with Kathy and her guests.

In fact, with its ensemble cast, its blend of comedy and tense drama and its exploration of social class, Beatriz at Dinner in hindsight feels like a dry run for The White Lotus, the smash hit HBO series White would go on to write.

Greed – Film4 – 11.40pm
Another quite good comedy-drama about the haves and have-nots, this time starring Steve Coogan and from writer-director Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People).

How to Get Ahead in Advertising – Film4 – 1.50am
Richard E. Grant re-teamed with the writer-director of Whitnail and I for this cult black comedy.
