Movies on TV Wednesday 8 December

Wednesday is here.

The midweek bump.

You made it.

You’d like to unwind with a movie or two.

Let’s see what we’ve got, shall we?

Here’s what’s on the box tonight – Wednesday, 8 December…

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World – Film4 – 6.20pm

Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany take to the seas to chase down a rival French ship in a Napoleonic epic that was clearly intended to start a franchise but didn’t fare well enough at the box office.

That’s a shame, as Master and Commander has a lot going for it, from excellent lead performances to a great sense of scale and frequent bursts of tension.

Crowe keeps pushing to make another one. We’d be on board.

V for Vendetta – Turner Classic Movies / TCM – 9pm

A vivid and voracious adventure in which a masked freedom fighter takes on a totalitarian government in a vicious dystopian future.

Natalie Portman and the vocal talents of Hugo Weaving star.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard – Film4 – 9pm

Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson do their foul-mouthed violent action comedy thing.

Airplane! – ITV4 – 10.10pm

Our main choice for you tonight is, simply put, one of the funniest comedy films ever.

The ‘jokes per minute’ ratio here is incredible, and so many of them land perfectly.

The plot is secondary, but it centres around an out of control airplane and the less-than-perfect passengers who must risk everything to ensure their safety.

That sounds dramatic, but trust us – it’s absolutely hilarious.

Small Axe: Lovers Rock – TG4 – 10.30pm

Another offering from Steve McQueen’s anthology series from 2020 – Lovers Rock focuses on the reggae genre and the freedom and love that it inspired in the form of 1980s London house parties and subsequent new romances.

The Boss – Film4 – 11.20pm

Melissa McCarthy IS the boss.

Maximum Risk – TCM – 11.45pm

Fairly throwaway 90s actioner with Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Rush Hour 2 – ITV4 – 12.05am

The second one.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones – Film4 – 1.25am

The fifth one.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
